The Deco Art Deco building, located at 741 S. Pacific Ave., is one of the most impressive buildings in the historic commercial district of San Pedro. Designed by architect Conrad Martin Ellington, it was one of the first buildings in the area, to incorporate the classic Art Deco style. It opened in 1931, as a Montgomery Ward department store.
Today, the building is occupied, and utilized by the owners, primarily for their own enjoyment.
The top floor, and portion of the mezzanine, is the owners' personal Penthouse Loft, encompassing approximately 7,000 sf., decorated with classic Art Deco furnishings, and architectural elements. There are also 2 kitchens, a "Display Kitchen", set up for cooking class use, and a "Commercial Kitchen", a wine cellar, and "Train Room", designed to simulate a 1930's/1940's style Pullman club car.
The balance of the building, is comprised of art galleries, a “faux” Cheese and Wine Shop, a tasting/gallery room, a basement "speak easy" CABARET, a Movie Memorabilia and Antique store, offices, and an approx. 2,000 sf. mezzanine Artist Loft apartment. Included, is a freight elevator, allowing access to all floors, and the alley.
The adjacent 731 S. Pacific Ave.building, is occupied by "COLLAGE” A Place for Art and Culture, a 501c3 nonprofit. "COLLAGE” offers a wide array of cultural events, as an outreach to the community, featuring entertainment, literary events, drama, art shows, music classes, and more.
The rear portion of the 731 S. Pacific Ave. building, is utilized by the owners, as a parking garage, with alley access, and capable of accommodating 6 vehicles.
The buildings are adjacent to each other, and located in the heart of the San Pedro historic commercial district. They are surrounded by shops, art galleries, antique stores, restaurants, live/work lofts, all within walking distance to the harbor waterfront.
